FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Most common GoldenEye 007 questions in one place to skim through.

How do I enter the push button codes? They don't work!
There is a trick to entering the codes, and not everyone gets it right away. The codes are done in ten steps, and each step is performed the same crucial way.
Another important thing, is that the directional buttons of the code use the control pad, and not the control stick.
Example: "L + down"
Start holding the "L" button, and hold it for a second. While still holding "L", begin holding down on the control pad. Keep holding down both buttons for an additional second, and then release them at the same time. Proceed to the next step of the code.

What is the beta version and where can I buy it?
"Beta" is just a term for a stage in development when a game is still being tested and undergoing changes. All the "neat things" inside the beta stages fascinate us. Things are often changed because of functionality (and sometimes licensing issues).

Where is the Spyder gun that's listed in the Instruction Booklet?
The Spyder weapon is still in the game, only under a different name. The booklet was printed before the game was completed. The Spyder gun is actually the Klobb, which was named after Ken Lobb of Nintendo.

Are the classic Bond villains Oddjob and Mayday found in the single player Mission mode?
No, just in Multiplayer. Jaws and Baron Samedi are the only classic Bond villains found in the main game. All four of these foes are enabled for Multiplayer when you complete the game on the easiest difficulty (finish the Cradle on Agent).

What is the "AC-10 AWARD" in Multiplayer?
The player used a considerable amount of Body Armor. The developers added this as a nod to one of their favorite games.
"Note: AC -10 (negative ten) is a reference to the armor class statistic in early versions of Dungeons & Dragons. A lower armor class, especially one below zero, implied a higher chance of hits missing"

How to I play as the previous James Bond actors Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton?
Deleted before the game was released, publicity shots seem to depict Timothy Dalton and Sean Connery in GoldenEye's Multiplayer. Their character select photos were also visible via Gameshark codes.
Removed for legal reasons, the photographs and tuxedo images were eventually located inside GoldenEye's ROM. Although the character models have been removed, GoldenEye enthusiasts have restored the former James Bond actors.

Where's the lost Citadel level?
A rough test map, still inside the memory. Completely unplayable in its' initial state, fan modifications have been made to restore the map completely. Not just with weapons, ammo, body armor and spawn points, but with entirely new textures.

How do I get the Aztec and Egyptian levels?
You need to complete every mission up to the Cradle on Secret Agent, to open the Aztec. For the Egyptian, you need to beat every single level (including Aztec) on 00 Agent difficulty.

What is the push button code to open up the Egyptian level?
Was always under the impression that there was not a code to unlock the Egyptian Temple... (Normally, one would have to complete every single mission [including Aztec] on the 00 Agent setting)

However, this code has been floating around the web - Although I cannot verify that it actually works...

Others have also had problems using the code. Presuming you already have experience entering these 10-step GoldenEye push-button codes, I wouldn't expect so much difficulty in getting this particular one to work...

Have heard that it can be entered in the Cheat Options folder. Apparently you must also have at least unlocked access to every level on 00 Agent. (having finished every level on Secret Agent difficulty)

Unlock Egypt:

L & R + Up
L & R + Right C
L + Down
R + Right
R + Up
L + Down
L + Left
L + Right C
L & R + Right C
L + Left

If I can verify where and how to actually use this code, this FAQ will of course be updated.

What are Gameshark and Action Replay?

These devices are known as video game enhancers or "cheat devices". They attach to the bottom of your N64 game cartridge, and plug into your N64.

They are used to change things in the game. They can allow you to do anything, from being Invincible to complete your missions, to activating long lost items and characters. They accomplish this, by using the codes that you enter, to alter what the game loads into memory.
Gamesharks are sold in North America, manufactured by Interact. Action Replay is the European counterpart to Gameshark.

Is there a Gameshark code for the beta version?
No. Many beta items, characters, images, vehicles and objects are, however. Numerous Gameshark codes can be used to alter the existing objects in the game, and replace them with beta objects.

How do you activate the Gameshark's Memory Editor?
You need a Gameshark Pro in order to view the game's RAM with the Memory Editor. In addiction to that, you also need the N64 Expansion Pak.
On the final setup screen before you load the game, make sure that the Code Generator is turned ON, and press start. When playing the game, press the Gameshark Button (the small black button on the front of the Gameshark) to enter into the Code Generator, and Memory Editor.

How did you get inside the Jungle Tower?
This question ranks right up there near the top of frequent questions I've received.

It's simply the Jungle's Moonjump Gameshark code:
D0064F30 0040
810C03DC 412B

With the code, you float upwards when walking over an elevation, and holding 'B'. Snapping a screenshot makes it seem as if Bond is actually standing inside the tower.

Is it even possible to earn the Invincible cheat?
Many people have thought that the feat of beating the Facility on 00 Agent in 2:05 or less is impossible. It does take skill, no doubt about it. But it also takes luck. It's almost necessary that Dr. Doak be in the upstairs laboratory. He starts in a random location every time you start the level, and there's nothing you can do about that. There are many tactics that people have used to earn the cheat. I've tried them all, and have recorded myself beating the level the easiest way, in 1:43. When using these tactics, with a bit of practice, it really isn't that hard.

How do you escape from the Train on 00 Agent, and keep Natalya alive?
It's extremely difficult to pull this off, because Natalya finishes her work on the computer at almost the same second that the Train explodes. But, it's possible to buy yourself some extra time... When you first enter the final train car where Ourumov is holding Natalya at gunpoint, step to the side, so that Xenia is directly behind Ourumov. Shoot and kill Ourumov, and keep firing to hit Xenia after Ourumov falls. Xenia will say that she's hit, and then leave with Alec as usual. If you pull this off, you'll magically be given extra time to complete the level. See the Train walkthru for more details.

How in the hell do I protect Natalya in the Janus Control Center???!
Possibly one of the most difficult objectives in the entire game. As Natalya fiddles/works away at (apparently) the only working computer in the building, bullets are flying by her head as she desparately tries to login to Windows 98.

Once the alarm sounds, guards will randomly start filtering in from either side of the room and down the stairs.

You can spot which way they're coming by scanning upwards.

I tend to frantically pace back and forth, watching up high, but also keeping sharp ears for the sound of breaking glass...

In addition to taking out the guys on the stairwells, snipers will appear from either side, and instantly start blasting at Natalya. This normally happens at least twice.

The real challenge comes when yet another sniper arrives - This time he doesn't have to break the glass before he opens fire!

Fortunately, Natalya is wearing "armor" and can withstand a few hits... But her health quickly gets worn down and she dies if you can't wheel around drop the guy soon enough.

Yet another hazard - While you're occupied with other guards, anothers might slip past your back, and stand (in one of two places on either side) between Natalya and the big screen and start shooting at her.

Just keep at it, making a bit more progress each time.
Also make sure that you've got the rest of your objectives down pat. No sense in going through all that effort to keep Natalya alive on a wasted mission.

How come I can't edit every Multiplayer character with a Gameshark/Action Replay?
Most characters have heads that are separate from their bodies. This means that you can customize the heads each receive. However, some characters' heads are actually part of their bodies, and therefore can't have another head used on their body. All of the characters who have an actual photo on the character select screen cannot be customized, except for Bond, and Mishkin.
So, you just can't use the heads and bodies when creating your "new" characters.

What would you consider the hardest levels to be?
It's a tough call, but I'd say some of the hardest levels (on 00 Agent) are the Train, Control, Caverns, and Aztec. It all depends on how you go about beating the level though.

How long did it take you to finish GoldenEye?
Three months, total, to beat every level, and every cheat. Not three months straight, of course. I beat about half of it, and then took a break for several weeks. I then went back and completed the rest.

What inspired you to create this site?
My personal project was just to create a page detailing the Multiplayer characters (and eventually maps and other strategies).

Experimented with formatting it as a webpages because I liked the layout. Decided to share some of the things I found in 1999, and have since been contacted by thousands of GoldenEye fanatics from all over the world.
